I purchased a 2 pack First Alert model P1210 from Costco in April 2018 and installed one in my new home. This morning July 19, 2018, only 3 months later, the alarm sounded at 1am waking me up and scaring me half to death as I thought there was a fire!

I got up only to find it was a defective smoke detector. On the back of the alarm its dated 2017 July 28, not even a year old! What gives? Its suppose to last 10 years!

It's now 1:45am, I'm exhausted and still shaky from the alarm going off.

I'll put the other alarm up, for now, for "some" peace of mind, but tomorrow BOTH smoke detectors are going back to Costco and I'll never buy a First Alert again.

I'll get another brand from Home Depot that uses a good old 9 volt battery.

PS...I wonder if any of the executives of First Alert would put a First Alert model P1210 in their homes after reading all of these negative reviews? I wonder whats hanging from THEIR ceiling to protect THEIR families?

Reason of review: Damaged or defective.

Preferred solution: Let the company propose a solution.

First Alert Cons: P1210 smoke detector.

Also purchased 4 First Alert P1210 from Costco in summer of 2019 with mfg dates of January 2019. 2 of the 4 have malfunctioned as of 9/5/2020. No more First Alert products in my house.

Funny this, I also bought mine at Costco, manufacture date 2018, installed in October 2019 and two of them failed in August 2020. First department came and tested two of three.

Two were faulty. Did Costco corner the market on this batch?

I also bought First Alert smoke detectors with June 2018 manufacturing dates. Itโ€™s now November 2018 and both are faulty and need replacing.

They are supposed to be 10 year life span!! What a scam.

First I made the mistake of assuming that my smoke alarms were electrical, so I hired an electrician to replace them. Could have done it myself with the P1210.

Two months later one of the eight alarms started beeping. Called First Alert, they said that they would not replace it unless I could prove to them that I had vacuum cleaned the alarms every two weeks. I put the alarm in my hand and vacuumed it. It still misfired.

I blew into it five times and it stopped beeping. People that have high ceilings are going to have fun with this.

In addition the on-line instruction book is too small to read without a microscope. They tell you to stop the thing from beeping by tearing off the break- off tab, but do not identify it.

SAME!!! Second time in a month.

I returned the first two-pack after a 3 am alarm waking my whole house up. Just happened again with a different detector from a whole different 2-pack.

(I returned the first two) thankfully itโ€™s 7pm this time. Seriously pissed.

I bought six of them for my apartments. ALL of them had the same defect that you've described.

This morning my First Alert P1210 smoke detector started randomly going off. This is my SECOND DEFECTIVE P1210!

The first one lasted all of 4 months before it started doing the same thing and this one lasted one month. My previous First Alert lasted 10 years without a hiccup, but if this is the kind of CRAP they are trying to push off on us Iโ€™ll never buy another one again!!!

Same issue here. We purchased these from Costco for various vacation rentals and ALL of them are starting to malfunction within less than 2 years. The company needs to recall these and replace / reimburse customers.
